Russian artist; painter and graphic artist
Studied at the Petersburg College of Industrial Art (1921). At the end of the 1920s, started contributing sketches to Leningrad newspapers that depcted everyday life of workers. Influenced by Niko Pirosmanishvili. In 1930s, created genre scenes. Joined the Union of Artists of the USSR and then the Army (1941). After the war, started on lithography. In mid-1950s, designed a special technique in colour lithography with clear-cut laconic lines, light tones, planar treatment of images.
Collections who hold exmaples of Ermolaev's work include the State Russian Museum, State Tretyakov Gallery, The State Museum of Fine Arts A.S. Pushkin, Museum of Modern Art New York, History Museum St. Petersburg, the National Gallery Washington.
