Augustus Edwin John

1878 - 1961

b. 1878 in Tenby; d. 1961 in Fordingbridge, Hants. Studied at the Slade School of Art in London under Henry Tonks and Frederick Brown. Accepted a post teaching art at the University of Liverpool. Spent periods travelling with his family in gypsy caravans through Wales and England, which inspired much of his work before World War I, including a series of etchings depicting gypsy life. Well-known early in the century for his drawings and etchings. Later work consisted of portraits. Known for the psychological insight of his portraits, many of which were considered cruel for the truth of the depiction. Greatly influenced by the work of Old Master painters, such as Peter Paul Rubens.
