Allen Jones

b. 1937 in Southampton. Studied at Hornsey College of Art (1958-59) under Alin Braund the lithographer and the Royal College of Art (1959-60). Taught at Chelsea School of Art (1964). English painter, sculptor and printmaker. Associated with the rise of Pop art. He mixed conflicting styles and drew less from contemporary culture than from the colour abstractions of Kandinsky and Robert Delaunay. Full extent of his Pop work emerged in sexually provocative fibreglass sculptures, life-size images of women as furniture with fetishist and sado-masochist overtones. Mid-1970s he returned to a more painterly style on canvases and a playful stylization in figure sculptures. His designs were used for stage, film and television. Works of paintings and prints have been exhibited in England, Holland, United States, Germany, and Italy.
