J.L Forain

1852-1931. French painter and illustrator. Became one of the leading modern caricaturists from Paris. His pictorial style can be traced to Manet and Degas. His pen-and-ink work combines economy of means with the power of expression and suggestion. His popularity began from the publication of "Comedie parisienne," which contains a series of two hundred and fifty sketches republished in book form. He contributed political drawings to the "Figaro," "Le Rire," "L'Assiette au beurre," "Le Courrier francais," and "L'Indiscret."
