Painter, etcher and engraver; mostly of landscapes and seascapes.

Ackroyd lives and is based in Bermondsey, London. He studied at Leeds College of Art (1956-61) and Royal College of Art, London (1961-4). Ackroyd became a member of the Royal Society of Etchers and Engravers in 1984-85 (RE). In 1988 he was elected an associate to the Royal Academy of Art and became a full academician in 1991 (RA). In 1994 he was appointed Professor of Etching at the University of the Arts, London. He was elected Senior Fellow of the Royal College of Art in 2000, and in 2007 received a CBE for his services to Engraving and Printing. Ackroyd is a frequent exhibitor across the globe.

Ackroyd is represented by public collections including Tate, Arts Council of Great Britain, British Council, British Museum and National Gallery of Scotland. Non-UK collections include the National Gallery of Art, Washington, USA.
