Michael Chaplin

born 1943

b. 1943 in Huntingdonshire. Studied graphics at Watford School of Art (1960-63) and printmaking at Brighton College of Art (1966-67). Elected as one of the youngest ever associates of the Royal Watercolour Society, became full member in 1997. Painter and printer. Teaches and runs residential schools throughout Britain. Works in Britain and abroad, producing the majority of his foreign work in early morning or late evening, when the shadows are low and theatrical. This enhances his technique of working loosely with watercolour, with images that have a lightness of touch. Also known for etchings and draughtmanship.
