Alfred Reginald Thomson attended the Royal School for the Deaf and Dumb, Margate, before joining the John Hassell School of Commercial Art, Kensington. After graduating, Thomson went onto produce several designs for posters and advertising. Thomson exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy from 1920, becoming a member in 1945. The 1930s and 1940s saw Thomson's art reach a very wide audience, with commissions coming from the Ministry of Information, the General Post Office and London Transport. During WWII Thomson was an Official War Artist to the Royal Air Force (1940-44), producing some of the finest military portraits of the war. After 1945, Thomson's military portraits established for him a reputation as an accomplished figure and portrait painter, and he received a series of public and private commissions to produce painted murals. Examples mural include those at the Science Museum and the Duncannon Hotel, both in London.
Thomson is represented by a number of public collections including the Tate, the Imperial War Museum (who holds an extensive collection of his RAF portraits), and also a number of regional museums.
