Antony Gormley

Antony Gormley

b. 1950 in London. Studied at Ampleforth College and Trinity College, Cambridge (1968-71). Studied Buddhism in India and Sri Lanka (1971-74) and then returned to London to study at the Central School of Art and Design (1973-74), Goldsmith's College (1975-77) and the Slade School of Art, London (1977-79). Most of his work takes the human body as its subject, with his own body used in many works as the basis for metal casts. Created large-scale installations in Cuxhaven, Germany and at the Royal Academy in London. Participated in several international group shows such as the Venice Biennale and Documenta 8. The Centro Galego de Arte, Contemporanea, Santiago de Compostela hosted a solo show of his work (2002). Awared the Turner Prize (1994) and the South Bank prize (1999). Has been exhibited at Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh, Serpentine Gallery, Hayward Gallery, Tate Gallery, Leeds City Art Gallery, Vancouver Art Gallery, and in 'The Raw and the Cooked' at the Barbican (1993).
