Thomas Joseph Pettigrew

1791 - 1865

Thomas Joseph Pettigrew (1791 - 1865) was a surgeon and antiquarian with an interest in Ancient Egyptian mummies. Also known as "Mummy Pettigrew", he became famous in London society in the 1830s for his private parties in which he unrolled and autopsied mummies, and displayed scientific curiosities. Pettigrew was engaged by the Duke of Hamilton to mummify him on his death in 1852; the Duke's body is now interred in a sarcophagus on his estate. Pettigrew was the founding treasurer of the British Archaeological Society.
