Denis Bowen

b. 1921 in Kimberley, South Africa; d. 2006 in London. Studied at Huddersfield School of Art (1938-41) and The Royal College of Art (1945-49). One-man exhibitions in London: New Vision Centre Gallery (1956-7) and Redfern Gallery (1958). Painter in oils and instructor. Usually taught full time while producing his artwork. Curated exhibitions and communicated with overseas artists. A pioneer of tachism, using vigorous blocks of paint and free-form brush strokes. Influenced by artists from European informal movement. Explored inner and cosmic space in his work. Experimented with new materials and promoted abstract art.
