William Gear

1915 - 1997

b. 1915 in Methil, Scotland; d. 1997 in Birmingham.

Painter of abstract compositions that were strong in colour.

Studied at Edinburgh College of Art (1932-37) and the Edinburgh University Fine Art Class (1936-37) under Gillies, Maxwell and McTaggart. Won Travelling Scholarship (1937-38) and travelled in Italy, Greece and the Balkans. Worked in Paris under Leger (1937). After WWII, worked with the Allied Control Commission with responsibility for securing art works. First one-man exhibition in Siena (1944). Lived in Paris (1947-50) then settled in England. Exhibited with the Cobra art group (1949). Exhibited at Gimpel Fils (1951). Member of the London Group (1953). Curator of the Towner Art Gallery, Eastbourne (1958-64). Head of the Fine Arts Department, Birmingham College of Arts and Crafts (1964).
