Takesada Matsutani

Takesada Matsutani

Born 1937 in Osaka, Japan

Japanese painter, sculptor and printmaker.

Takesada Matsutani joined the famous Japanese avant-garde group Gutaï in 1963. A move to Paris occurred 3 years later. In 1967 Matsutani moved again, this time to New York, where he entered Atelier 17, a printmaking studio run by Stanley William Hayter (1901-1988), first set up in Paris in 1927. American artists such as Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko also made prints at the New York Atelier 17. Matsutani became Hayter's assistant in 1969 where he spent considerable time developing his skills as an engraver and his senses for geometric abstraction and colour - in particular the colour black. In his work, Matsutani combines a variety of materials - including fabric, paper and vinyl - exploring their own unique properties in colour, texture and surface.

Matsutani has been a frequent exhibitor in major arts and print exhibitions across Europe, the United States and Japan since the 1960's.
