DescriptionFake sculpture. It has been carved to resemble an ancient stone decorated with figures from a lost civilization. It was common for "ancient" artefacts to be passed off as real ones and Richard Cuming acquired faked objects, as did many other collectors. Henry Syer Cuming later spent a good deal of his life unmasking forgers and their forgeries. Sometimes the forgeries are as interesting as the "real" objects" and still raise questions today about what makes an "authentic" object.
