DescriptionHead of a figurine, in grey earthenware. Possibly a 19th century fake impressed from a mould made from a precolombian original. It consists of an intact face wearing a very large earring, the headdress has broken off. Cuming believed this to be a Tepitoton, or Penates, from Mexico. Tepicton or tepictoton (pl.) were small gods of the mountain in ancient Mexico. Tepicton means small idol of a god. It is very similar to Teotihuacan sculptures and painting, but with ear spools larger than usual. The authenticity of the item is unconfirmed, but if it is fake it has very good execution. On View
