DescriptionFlint arrow-head collected during the Franklin expedition to the Arctic region of North America, 1819-1822.

Arctic arrow heads were always constructed in accordance with a target animal. Many arrows were tipped with ivory or antler because of the material's weight and abundance, but arrow-heads were sometimes made with rock for animals requiring more effort to kill; like bears and caribou. Chert and iron were the most popular materials used for large animal arrow heads, but frequently they were made from ivory, and no reason for this material distinction has been found.
