DescriptionNorman Janes was born in Egham, Surrey, studied at Regent Street Polytechnic and the Slade School of Fine Art. Camberwell Grove, previously known as Walnut Tree Grove, was once a local beauty spot used for picnics. In it stands the famous Grove Chapel, a Calvinist conventicle built in 1818 by Joseph Irons. When the manor house at the top of the hill was demolished in the eighteenth century and the entrance to Camberwell Church Street opened up it became a public road. The Grove was broken up into building lots in 1850, and some of the original trees stand in the present front gardens. It still retains much of its elegant Georgian grandeur. The purchase of this painting was approved by the Committee for Local Collection in 1953.
