DescriptionSculpture of a seated figure of Isis. This sculpture would have originally included the infant Horus in the missing arm of the figurine. Mounted on a wooden block.

Images of deities as families groups were particularly popular in Late Period Egypt. This one would have been intended to depict Isis suckling Horus. Images such as this would have been placed in temples by wealthy members of society. Both Isis and Horus were seen as protective deities - Isis due to her powerful magic and Horus as Harpokrates (Greek for "Horus the Child" as he appears here in child form) for his power over dangerous animals. This image would also have been seen as a powerful symbol of rebirth.
