DescriptionInscribed: 'The Balcony after Richard Parkes Bonington'.

Margaret Sarah Carpenter was a close friend and associate of the English Romantic landscape artist, Richard Parkes Bonington. Bonington painted a series of balcony scenes throughout Italy, one of which is almost identicle to Carpenter's Venetian view seen here. Titled 'A Cavalier and his Lady on a Terrace, Genoa, Italy' (1826), it is likely to be the closest inspiration for Carpenter's watercolour 'The Venetian Balcony'.
