Barbara Hepworth

b. 1903 in Wakefield, West Yorkshire; d. 1975. Major British sculptor and artist of the twentieth century. Studied at the Leeds School of Art (1920-21) and the Royal College of Art (1921-24). Studied for a brief period in Italy. Married the sculptor John Skeaping, then the painter Ben Nicholson. Primarily worked in stone, wood and bronze. First exhibitions were with Skeaping at their studio in St. John's Wood (1927) and at the Beaux Arts Gallery (1928). Joined the Seven and Five Society (1931). Member of the group Abstraction-Creation and of Unit One, which influenced her to abandon figuration for pure geometric and abstract forms while nature continued to be a major source for inspiration.
