Painter, etcher and wood engraver

Norman Janes first studied art at the Regent Street Polytechnic, before moving onto study at the Slade School of Fine Art under the influential teacher Henry Tonks. Janes learned the arts of etching and engraving under William Palmer Robins at the Central School of Art and Crafts. Janes would later go on to attend the Royal College of Art and study printmaking under Sir Frank Short and Malcom Osborne. Janes' work appeared in exhibitions both in Britain and abroad, in such locations as Florence, Paris, Venice, South Africa and the United States. Janes also exhibited regularly for a number of years with the South London Artists and went onto teach at Hornsey School of Art and The Slade School. Janes was made an Honorary Secretary of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers (RE) between 1945 and 1962.
