DescriptionBellarmine jug glazed and stamped with a face thought to be either Cardinal Roberto Bellarmino (1542 - 1621), an opponent of Protestantism, or the Medieval mythical "Wild Man". Bellarmine jugs were imported to England from Germany and the Netherlands from the 1550s. In the early 17th century English potters began to produce similar stoneware.
