DescriptionSmall reddish earthenware figure of a seated woman. Depicted with hands on her knees, necklace, large ear-plugs and a folded headdress or plaits folded over to the centre of her head. It is black on the reverse, possibly from scorching by flames, and there are rub marks on the front. The Cumings bought a number of objects from countries in South America but many of these are thought to be fake, made for the tourist trade. The marks on this piece might be an attempt to make it look older but unlike many of the "Aztec" or other similar objects in the collection this one is not identified as fake. Henry Syer Cuming worked hard to uncover forgers but inevitably some found their way into this and other museum collections.
