DescriptionAlan Reynolds is a contemporary British painter who enjoyed enormous success in the 1950s. Born in Suffolk in 1926, Reynolds studied at Woolwich Polytechnic and at the Royal College of Art before gaining popularity for his painting, which largely explored botanical themes. He went on to teach at various schools in London in the mid 20th century. Similar to Paul Cézanne, and perhaps inspired by his days in polytechnic school, his landscapes are presented in geometric terms. Reynolds combines the beauty of nature with design and composition. Later, he began to experiment with abstraction and his style continues to evolve.In Near the Village, lush, rounded trees and shrubbery surround balanced triangular and trapezoidal rooftops. A night scene, the red roofs pop against the darkness. The Camberwell Council Library Committee purchased this work from the artist in 1952.
