DescriptionAt one time all the area around Dulwich was farmland. Before refrigeration became widespread, London depended for much of its fresh milk on daily supplies brought in from surrounding farms. In 1853 Friern Manor Dairy Farm was described in The Illustrated London News as 'one of the largest dairy farms of the metropolis'. However, the demand for housing was so great that Friern Manor was eventually sold. The farm formerly stood near the junction of Barry Road and Goodrich Road in what is now East Dulwich. Barry Road takes its name from Sir Charles Barry, architect of two Dulwich churches built in the then fashionable Gothic style; St. Stephens, College Road and St. Peter's, Lordship Lane.On View
