DescriptionWide Inuit knife made of flat slate inserted into a wooden handle. The slate blade is flat with a wide, concave edge, one side enlarging into a point. It is set into a long, cylindrical piece of wood with rounded ends. This knife was probably used as an "ulu," a specific tool for skinning and preparing animals. Though this particular piece has a wooden handle, the handles were often made of antler. These implements were utilized most often by women, and still are used today in an updated form.
