DescriptionPart of cartonnage from the coffin of a mummy. It is painted with figures and hieroglyphs in red, blue, green, yellow and black, and varnished.

Cartonnage is made of plastered layers which are flexible enough for moulding and provide a flat layer for painting. It was used to make mummy masks, mummy casings and decorative pieces. Cartonnage coffins came into use in the Third Intermediate Period, replacing the innermost coffin in elite burials. They were often brightly painted.
