DescriptionWooden toy model of a cow feeding a calf. It is mounted on a rectangular wooden base with four wheels. The cow is painted white and brown with a red collar, the calf dark brown, and the base green in imitation of grass. Purchased at St. Bartholomew's Fair in 1850.The fair at Smithfield dates back to the 12th century, when it was first held to celebrate the Feast of St. Bartholomew. In the 1700s Bartholomew Fair was a popular national and international event, featuring acrobats, prize-fighters, musicians and wild animals.
