DescriptionSmall bronze figure of Osiris, god of the dead. He is standing in human form, wearing an "atef" crown and holding a crook and flail. The figure is mounted on a dark brown modern block of wood. It was one of several found in a tomb in Thebes.
Egyptian gods had particular styles of crown associated with them. Osiris's crown, the atef, is shown as a white cloth "bulb" shaped head piece with ostrich feathers on either side.
The Cuming manuscript describes this piece as a "rude work" meaning probably rather crude and says it comes from Henry Salt.
Salt (1780 to 1827) was an artist, traveller and collector, as well as diplomat and consul in Egypt. His pieces found their way back to many museums in Britain.
