DescriptionRoman pistillum. Made of a solid length of green glass, rounded at one end. The word 'pistillum', which gave us our word 'pestle', is actually Latin for 'pounder'. It would have been used for grinding herbs, spices, medicines, or pigments. Found at Queen Victoria Street, London in 1869.
